My Therapist Says I Shouldn't Bottle This Stuff Up

Do you know how to use an elevator? You may think you do. It's likely, however, that you're one of the depressingly large number of people who are clueless when it comes to efficient human-elevator interaction. Nothing grates my nerves more than watching an otherwise fully functional adult walk onto a 'down' elevator when they really want to go 'up'. Take a tip from me, people. If your button's still lit up, then your elevator just plain ain't here yet.

  • As I live in a condo, I see this so much. I can't help but shake my head. It is funny that there are still those who haven't quite 'got' how an elevator actually works. *sigh*

  • To Brad: When I interact with a machine, it's my habit to try and make that interaction as efficient as possible. Whether it's using keyboard shortcuts on the computer or programming speed dial into my cell phone. It surprises me when people neglect to learn new and faster ways to interact with something when they use it day after day.

By the way, congratulations on the move to your own domain. Your new site looks great. Was it easy to make the transition to WordPress?

  • I live in a town without elevators of any kind for human transport...just 'freight elevators' in a couple buildings. So, in my town the equivalent of people not yet having learned how to use elevators is those who have not yet learned how to use doorbells to be buzzed into the building. If the person they seek in flat 2, for example, is not in, at 3am, they will try buzzing *everyone* else at this hour, buzzing repeatedly until someone gets out of bed to let him/her into the building. Elevators are one thing in condos, but what about people who haven't yet learned how to appropriately utilize doorbells!? My other pet peeve are the international courier service men who are buzzed in to deliver a parcel and who wake me up at 8am on a saturday morning...and proceed to flirt with me half-awake! Keep it professional people.
At least until 10am when I am awake enough to tune into such mutterings and verbally defend myself. It's a crazy world out there when it comes to life in multiple dwellings, condos...perhaps it is supposed to teach us some level of tolerance (the proximity to other people we live with/share the building with). Mostly, it seems to have the effect of just getting on our nerves. Perhaps we should have a re-education program for those who do not realize how to properly use elevators, doorbells, and other components of the public space which infringe on our ability to enjoy these services effectively. Or perhaps your therapist argues we should just "think of a quiet place and go there" until we reach that zen state and no longer notice the ineffective use of elevators and doorbells as an irritation. =)

  • To Anonymous #1: I can't blame the delivery boys for flirting with you, no matter what time of day! ;)

For me, the best solution would be to take a deep breath and ignore it. I let other people's little quirks get to me far more than I should and although it would be nice if we could forcibly register people into those 're-education' programs that you suggest (kidding!), I'll probably be a better person for learning to deal with these annoyances.
